IG006: IACUC Required Training for Use of Animals

The Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) is under a federal mandate to ensure investigators and other personnel be appropriately qualified and experienced for conducting procedures on living animals.  Adequate arrangements shall be made for their in-service training, including the proper and humane care and use of laboratory animals. 

The following training is mandatory for all personnel who are listed on the Animal Use Protocol.  Approval of the protocol will be held until all training has been completed.

IACUC Tutorial

  • For all IACUC training, the website is: Training | Animal Care Program | Michigan State University (msu.edu) (https://animalcare.msu.edu/training/index.html)
  • It is recommended that all other personnel who may come in contact with the animal(s) (including farm workers, custodial services, and secretarial/clerical support), take this tutorial.

Species Specific Tutorial

  • Online trainings for animal species frequently used at MSU are located at Species-Specific Training | Animal Care Program | Michigan State University (msu.edu) (https://animalcare.msu.edu/training/species.html), researchers are expected to review these materials every 3 years.
  • Researchers working with rodents (mice and rats) within CAR animal facilities are required to take the “Working within CAR for Rodent Users” every 3 years, typically at the time of de novo protocol submission, if not before.
    • This module can be found by clicking the ‘Rodents’ tab under “Species Specific Training: Online Course List” at the site listed above and provides details about expectations for working in CAR facilities.
    • If rodent users have surgery as part of their protocol, all personnel on that protocol are required to complete the “Rodent Surgery and Aseptic Technique – WBT” training which can be found under the species specific training website; additional skills: Species-Specific Training | Animal Care Program | Michigan State University (msu.edu) (https://animalcare.msu.edu/training/species.html)
  • If there are no species-specific modules for the animals being used in the research, the protocol team members must complete the Non-Traditional Species course. Documentation of training must be maintained by the PI with the project records.
