IG004: Protocol Expiration and Renewal
IACUC Guideline Number: IG004, Approved By: IACUC, Approval Date: 6/12/2025, Version: 4
All protocols expire three years from the date of the original approval. If the animal use will continue beyond its three-year expiration, the Principal Investigator (PI) must submit a new protocol for review and approval by the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC). It is recommended to submit a new protocol for review at least six weeks before the expiration date.
If a new protocol has not been approved prior to the protocol expiration date, animals on the protocol will be transferred to the Campus Animal Resources (CAR) holding protocol (refer to Guideline IG005 – Management of Animals from Expired Protocols). Under this holding protocol:
- All animals will be under the control and management of the MSU Attending Veterinarian (AV).
- No research, teaching, testing, or breeding activities can be conducted.
- Payment of all per diem charges will remain the responsibility of the PI and the department. These charges cannot be charged to any federally funded grant.
