Animal Use Approval - IACUC Process

Before, during, and after your project is approved, the IACUC continues to have responsibility for overseeing the care and use of animals at MSU.

  • Protocol review - IACUC generally meets monthly for a half-day to review protocols and discuss other issues brought before the committee.
  • University program review - At least once every six months, the IACUC reviews MSU's program for humane care and use of animal. Reports are submitted to the Institutional Official.
  • Facility inspections - At least once every six months, IACUC staff inspect the university's animal facilities including animal study areas. Reports are submitted to the Institutional Official.
  • Impromptu inspections - At anytime, the IACUC may inspect a facility including animal study areas.

Primary Investigators are responsible for scheduling veterinary consultation meetings (CARvets@msu.edu) prior to submitting an AUF and at any time during the project.
